It should go without saying that if you’re at all serious about getting started working with air tools, you’re going to first need to find yourself a good air compressor. They come in a wide array of shapes, sizes and types. In order to know what type is right for you, it’s important to have a good idea of your intended use.

Power Source:

If this is your first compressor, and it’s just for home use or hobby work, you’ll want to pick an electric model.

However, if you’re planning on using this compressor at remote locations such as construction sites, you might want to invest in the gas model. Another key advantage of the gas-powered compressor is that they sometimes offer more power than is available through household current.

Whenever we talk about air compressors on this site, unless otherwise stated, we’re just going to assume that you’re using an electric compressor. They’re by far the most common. (And it really doesn’t matter what your power source is. They all serve the same purpose in the end.)

If you’re ordering an electric compressor online, make sure that you pick one that’s compatible with your house current. Different parts of the world work on different electrical standards.
